Sales engagement
Also known as: sales engagement platform, SEP
- Definition
- Sales engagement is the category of software and processes that orchestrates multi-touch outreach across email, phone, LinkedIn, and other channels, typically organized as sequences or cadences with scheduled steps and tracked engagement.
Sales engagement evolved from email cadence tools into platforms that coordinate every outbound touch a sales rep makes: cold email, follow-ups, LinkedIn messages, phone calls, video, direct mail. The unit of work is the sequence (or cadence): an ordered set of steps over days or weeks, with branching based on prospect behavior.
Established sales engagement platforms (Outreach, SalesLoft, Apollo) bundle prospect data, sequencer, dialer, and analytics. Newer tools split these layers: dedicated cold email infrastructure (Instantly, Smartlead), dedicated dialers, and workspaces that orchestrate them.
The category is converging with AI agents. The next generation of sales engagement is less about scheduled cadences executed manually and more about AI agents that decide who to reach, when, and through which channel, based on signals and outcomes.
How Sales engagement relates to Clentt
Clentt provides the orchestration layer for sales engagement. Cold email runs through the Instantly plugin, multichannel sequences are built in the workflow builder, and AI agents can act across the engagement stack via MCP. Native pipeline tracks the outcomes.
